I wasn’t gonna do one of these because I’m not so great at being clever and romantic, but seeing all the excellent V-day cards around the net got the better of me. <3 Have a great day!
Last one! Some more long-term planning. Abbie will run into these guys down the road. Hah, there are quite a few uniforms in this world, and I’m not the greatest at designing them. But I enjoy playing around with them all the same.
Well, that was fun! January was super intense and I’m really glad it’s over. Next week we’ll get this show back on the road. Thanks for hanging in there, everyone!
Ahaha these sketches sure are a little random. I was warming up and trying to churn out as many ideas as possible at the same time. Some of these are actual characters who will be making actual appearances at some point in time, others are just experiments.

Fergus is buddies with Rolf and Nat. His basic design, along with Rolf’s, has survived from the very first drafts of chapter one that I ever did, years and years ago.

Silhouette line-ups help me sort out character designs. Here’s Rolf and his crew – I threw Abbie and Jaime in for scale. You can click on the image to make it larger!
Let’s look at some upcoming baddies. Like this guy.
And her.
When drawing more villainous characters I often think back to Tite Kubo’s designs in Bleach. He finds interesting ways to split the face into a really creepy grin (and of course that’s what looking villainous is all about).
And also some quick weapon sketches. These aren’t final at all, I’m just trying to get a feel for the possibilities…
It’s the between chapter break, which means it’s time to pull back the curtain and offer a little peek at MFK’s inner workings. If you’ve got questions, feel free to ask, and I’ll do my best to answer.
To start things off, I took some time to look at the story’s direction as a whole and revisit some larger details about the world. I’m not going to say that things won’t change down the road, but here’s a bit of background info as it currently stands. :3
Here we have a rough draft of the Rojardinian calendar, which references seasonal changes, the cardinal elements, the chief religion of the world, and the humor system, all of which form the foundation of the laws that govern Rojardin (pardon my scribbly handwriting). Think of humoralism as a mix of bloodtype and Zodiac. The time of year you’re born determines the color of your humor, which also influences your elemental affinity and personality. Parapsi are bound to the system more strictly than other humans; one’s humor can also have an effect on one’s range of abilities.
The map has been a work in progress since… forever. And to be honest I’m still playing around with it. I have a general idea of where certain cities and landmarks need to be, but there’s some wiggle room in exactly how they’re laid out.
Below I actually try to make it look like a map. And look at that, true to Jaime’s word, Little Marigold is not on it.
Whoops! But don’t worry, I know where it is (kinda).
Ahhhh sorry everyone. I kinda dug myself into a hole and I’m slowly trying to crawl back out. Deadlines, events and whatnot. One minute you’re thinking oh yeah, I’m so on top of things, I’ve got it all under control, and the next thing you know three weeks have passed and you’re banging your head against a wall. I’m going to come back to M.F.K. as quickly as possible, but right now there are a few commitments that take priority. And if all goes well, I’ll actually be able to share some of them in the coming weeks.
The day job’s been pretty busy as well! Check out this spot my studio did for Wreck-it Ralph. I storyboarded it and also designed the little 8-bit graphics at the beginning.
Argh, I keep forgetting to mention that I had to cancel AnimeiCon as well. :[ An unexpected car repair came up and I really couldn’t swing both. If any of you go, let me know how you like it, I’m very curious about it! I hope to try again next year.
Okay guys, taking another break this week. This past weekend I was attending the Society for Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators annual summer conference here in L.A. I learned a ton and met some truly amazing writers and artists. It was an overwhelming weekend, and I am emotionally and physically exhausted. But the good news is that this is the last event for me for a while. I never imagined the summer would be so jam-packed, but at last, it’s pretty much over!
While we’re on the subject of cons, there’s one happening in Monterey, CA at the end of November called AnimeiCon, and I’m gonna be there! It’s the con’s second year and my first time going, I’m pretty excited. More details to come.
Thanks for hanging in there!
Sooo… you might have missed the last update.
It’s not your fault. The website experienced some unexpected downtime. I’m really sorry. :[ My host sprung an unannounced server repair that took a lot longer than predicted. All of my sites were down from Monday to Saturday. But now we’re back up, hopefully nothing like this ever happens again, because if it does I will be moving hosts and I’d rather not go through the headache of that.
I mentioned this previously, but it’s a good idea to follow MFK through social media in case something unexpected happens. MFK has a Facebook page, and I’m also on Twitter and Tumblr (the links are also at the top of the sidebar).
Also also, MFK is making its very first convention appearance! I will be at Anime Expo June 29-July 2, exhibiting in Artist Alley. If you’re there, come by and say hi! I’ll update with our table location when the information becomes available.
Annnnd… again.
I’m sorry guys. Still wrestling with this project at work, but I think the battle’s about over now? Can’t say what the week will bring, but I’m gonna be working super hard to bring you the next MFK update next Monday! Stay tuned~.
Sorry guys. I usually prep for the next set of updates at the end of the previous week, but unfortunately I got hit with a crazy amount of overtime at work that left absolutely no time for anything else. It’s the first time this has happened since I started working there three months ago, so hopefully it doesn’t become a trend. But yeah, I’m burnt out, I don’t even have the energy to try and be witty about it. ;o; BUT if this leaves a gaping hole in your lives, you should check out some of these comics (it’s a lot, so they should keep you busy for a while). So go, off with ya. I’ll see you next week.
